STE Rules Applied

    What is Simplified Technical English?

ASD-STE100 (Simplified Technical English) is a controlled language standard originally developed for aerospace maintenance documentation. It limits vocabulary and grammar to reduce ambiguity and improve comprehension—especially for non-native English readers.

    Limited vocabulary

Use approved words only. One word = one meaning. "Follow" means to come after; use "obey" for rules.

    Short sentences

Procedural sentences: max 20 words. Descriptive sentences: max 25 words. One instruction per sentence.

    Active voice

Write "Tighten the bolt" not "The bolt should be tightened." Direct commands are clearer.

    Simple verb tenses

Use present tense for procedures. Avoid complex constructions like "would have been completed."

This demo shows the STE approach. Real STE compliance requires the full ASD-STE100 specification and approved dictionary.
